Claymate Online Studio was created in Martha Rettig's Information Architecture II Class at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Spring 2020. Due to COVID-19 all of my college's learning was transitioned to online, this included majors whose work requires themto be in a studio, (Sculpture, Metalsmithing, Ceramics, Glassblowing, and more.) Although we were planning on doing a different project for the second half of the spring semester, Martha had my class shift directions and create a product prototype solution to a problem we were all facing: how in the world do you practice studio art-making online?
My solution to this problem is Claymate, an online studio classroom specifically geared towards ceramics majors. I was inspired to specifically create a product for ceramics students because I knew firsthand how much they were struggling with the transition
to online learning. Claymate creates a space for ceramics students to interact with their classmates, teachers, and other ceramics artists in an online setting. The web app has two functions, the Studio and the Library. The Studio is a space for different class
modules administrated by teachers. Here teachers can post assignments and tutorials, and students can share photos or videos
of their process and work, along with inspiration gathered from artists in the Library. The Library is a space for students and
ceramics artists to share their work publicly, and interact with other artists.
